Public Outreach Public Outreach During the Design Phase
During the design of the I-10 Widening, ADOT initiated and maintained contact with numerous affected and interested parties. Ongoing contact with business owners, residents, neighborhood associations, property owners, business associations and special interest groups affected by the project was a vital component of the public involvement effort. Concerns and requests from the public led to a number of changes in the project's plans. Public Meetings
Two open house-style public meetings were held to provide information and hear public input. The first meeting was held on Dec. 1, 2004, and the second on Oct. 11, 2005. Both were publicized through paid advertising, news releases to the media and mailings to 40,000 contacts. Comments were solicited and documented during and after both meetings, summarized and provided to the project team for consideration. Meetings with Residents and Neighborhood Associations Over three hundred in-person meetings were held with residents, neighborhood associations, property owners and special interest groups. Meetings with Area Businesses Throughout the design phase, the team met with businesses in the project area. Based on the information collected from business owners, managers and business organizations, a consultant, Marie Miyashiro-Collins, was added to the public outreach team to provide business and organizational development expertise. Marie planned and implemented a business assessment effort to hear business requests and concerns and to help businesses prepare for construction. The business assessment began in spring 2006 and was completed in fall 2006. Visit the business information page for more information on the assessment and its results. News Media
ADOT provided area media outlets with fact sheets, news releases, and traffic alerts, and held media briefings to involve local newspapers, radio and television outlets in disseminating information to the public. During the design phase of the project, the media ran multiple stories about construction plans, commuting issues, economic impact and many other important aspects of the project. Informational Materials
Materials were created to convey accurate and easy-to-understand information about the project, and were designed to enable the public to provide input and express their concerns. The materials included fact sheets, Web site postings, news releases, renderings, models, illustrations and brochures. Web site
A project Web site was established during design, which evolved into this present site. It's Easy to Stay Informed! For current information
