Project History
Interstate Frontage Roads
In 1989, ADOT began the design and construction of continuous, one-way frontage roads from Ina Road to 29th Street. This frontage road system was developed in order to expand the capacity of I-10 and to provide a detour for traffic during the widening of mainline I-10. The frontage roads are complete and motorists can travel between Ina Road and 29th Street on a two lane, one-way frontage road system.
I-10 Planning and Design Widening 1-10 in the Tucson metro area has been in the planning and design phases for many years. Three separate projects — Prince Road to Grant Road, Grant Road to St. Mary's Road and St. Mary's Road to 29th Street — were combined in 2003 into one project. After looking at traffic patterns under this scenario, ADOT and the City of Tucson realized that constructing one large project reduced construction time by seven years and saved the taxpayers 30 percent of the cost to complete them separately. This solution allows all major cross streets to remain open throughout construction, and keeps two lanes of I-10 in each direction open to through-traffic throughout the three-and-a-half year project. The project was originally scheduled for completion in spring 2010 but was completed ahead of schedule in the fall of 2009.
