Improvements to I-10
The I-10 Widening project from Prince Road to 29th Street is a vital improvement to the I-10/I-19 corridor, which currently experiences heavy traffic and congestion during peak hours, and is projected to handle rapidly increasing traffic during the coming years. Adding capacity to the roadway has increased safety and maintains mobility in and through the metro Tucson area. Keeping this developing economic corridor moving is key to realizing potential economic growth and minimizing long-term environmental and lifestyle impacts on surrounding neighborhoods.
Originally planned to be constructed as three separate projects, which would have taken 10 years to complete and would have increased the cost to taxpayers by 30 percent, this project was combined and scheduled to be completed in approximately three years at a cost of approximately $200 million; however, the final configuration of I-10 from Prince Road to 29th Street has been completed ahead of schedule.
- Expanded I-10 to Eight Lanes
The project expanded the six-lane freeway to eight lanes—four in each direction, with an additional auxiliary lane between entrance and exit ramps.
- Built Seven New Bridges and Underpasses
Seven new bridges and underpasses have been constructed, one at each of the following intersections: Grant Road, Speedway Boulevard, St. Mary's Road, Congress Street, Granada Avenue/Cushing Street, 18th Street and 22nd Street.
These new bridges have been built with the capacity to accommodate future City improvements and the widening of cross streets.
