I-10 Widening: Prince Road to 29th Street

Construction Information

The widening of I-10 from Prince Road to 29th Street is to date the largest single ADOT roadway improvement project in southern Arizona. The project was awarded as a joint venture to Kiewit Western Company and Sundt Construction, Inc. Budgeted at $200 million, the project is designed to accomplish its goals with the least impact to the traveling public and the surrounding areas in the following ways:

• Reduces construction from 10 years to 3.5

• Builds a Traffic Operations Center

• Keeps 8 arterial cross streets open

• Provides professional advice to businesses

• Keeps 2 lanes in each direction on I-10 open

• Implements extensive signing

• Keeps 6 frontage road lanes open for local traffic

• Offers alternative commuting methods

• Keeps frontage road speed limits of 40-45

January - June 2007, Frontage Roads Are Prepared
Between the beginning of construction in January 2007 and the closing of all entrance and exit ramps from Prince Road to 29th Street in the last half of June 2007, the contractors completed the following tasks:

  • Added a third travel lane in each direction to the frontage roads on both sides of I-10
  • Relocated utilities
  • Re-timed traffic signals
  • Added turning bays to frontage roads
  • Built a Traffic Operations Center that includes:
    • 72 cameras with live feeds all along the construction route
    • Video monitor wall for the center’s 24/7 staff to monitor traffic conditions
    • Real-time links to signs, signal controls, Web sites and portable message remotes

From June 2007 - Spring 2010
Entrance and exit ramps between Prince Road and 29th Street closed in the last half of June 2007. All local traffic will use the three-lane I-10 frontage roads to access cross streets. Through traffic (vehicles that do not need to exit between Prince Road and 29th Street) will continue to travel on I-10 using two lanes in each direction, which will stay open throughout the three-year construction period.

Major cross streets will remain open during construction. However, there will be temporary closures of these major streets for the demolition and reconstruction of bridges that will occur at night or on weekends, and will be of limited duration. Adjacent cross streets will not be closed at the same time. Those bridges are located at Grant Road, Speedway Boulevard, St. Mary's Road, Congress Street, Granada Avenue/Cushing Street and 22nd Street.

In early June 2008, construction on one side of the freeway was completed and traffic moved to that side as the other side is reconstructed.
